Turbine Gas Path — Five Sections in the Order Air Meets Them

The Brayton cycle runs continuously: compress, burn, expand. Air never flows backwards through a turbine, and over-temperature or overspeed — even briefly — can scrap hot-section parts, so the start envelope and the abort calls are limits rather than advice.

Reference notes

Turbine engines move air through inlet, compressor, combustor, turbine and exhaust sections. A turbofan also divides air through the bypass duct; a turboshaft extracts power to drive a transmission and rotor system.

Start monitoring uses rotational speed, fuel flow, light-off, oil pressure and EGT. A hung start stagnates below the required idle speed; a hot start produces an excessive EGT rise. Both require the approved start-abort procedure.

Maintenance relies on trend monitoring, borescope inspection, oil analysis, vibration data and life-limited-part records. Generated visual models support training, but actual limits always come from approved aircraft and engine data.
