Reference notes
You cannot fix what you cannot find. Orthographic drawings show a part from several exact views with dimensions and tolerances; exploded views show assembly order; schematics show electrical and hydraulic logic rather than physical layout. Charts convert readings, so interpolate carefully and respect the units on the axis.
The title block carries part number, revision, scale, projection symbol and general tolerances. Never work from an outdated revision — confirm the effectivity and revision against the current publication before starting. Sketches you produce must follow the same discipline: dimensions, datum references and notes.
Location on the aircraft uses zones and stations, such as fuselage stations measured in inches from a declared datum, together with the ATA 100 chapter and section codes used to identify systems in every publication and record.
Publications form a hierarchy: the type certificate data sheet, the aircraft maintenance manual, the illustrated parts catalog, wiring diagrams, service bulletins and service instructions, and the airworthiness directives that override them. Where they conflict, the mandatory airworthiness directive and the approved data govern.
